A so-called zombie home in Mount Vernon has been torn down – one of 80 across the city that Mayor Richard Thomas says need to go.
The neighborhood eyesore on South Ninth Avenue was burnt out after a fire in January.
Neighbors says it has been a blight on the community ever since. Mayor Thomas says the homes have been sucking the life out of Mount Vernon.
"We're presenting a plan to demolish all the zombie structures in Mount Vernon, and we hope that the Council and comptroller continue to support this initiative," says Thomas. "We have to clean it up. We can't allow this to live next door."
City officials say at least two more zombie homes will be torn down over the next two weeks.
