As News 12 celebrates Black History Month, the spotlight is on one local entrepreneur baking up a storm in the Bronx.
Tristan Trowers runs Tris Pies out of his home kitchen, where he bakes and ships sweet potato pies across the country. He also offers them for pick-up.
Trowers runs this business separate from his 9-to-5 job as a school social worker. It all started after a 2012 Thanksgiving when he introduced his family to sweet potato pie.
“It's very different from most pies that you will taste out there and it just you know feels like that warm hug that you never know you needed,” said Trowers.
After his friends and family kept asking for more of his pies, he launched his online business in 2019. During the pandemic, he donated his pies to hospital workers.
His advice to starting entrepreneurs – just get started, it’s okay to fail.
"Whatever the idea is start it,” said Trowers. “It's okay to fail, it's okay to mess up and it's also okay to ask for help."
