President Joe Biden announced that the federal government will purchase and distribute 500 million at-home COVID-19 tests at no cost.
COVID-19 cases have been on the rise as stores face shortages of at-home tests.
The Walgreens along Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers had empty shelves where it once used to carry COVID-19 testing swabs, even after it limited supplies to customers.
Biden says the federal government will combat this shortage by making millions of at-home COVID-19 tests available to residents who request one online starting next month.
Some residents told News 12 they were frustrated that this action wasn’t taken sooner.
"Now is the time, not next month,” one Yonkers resident said.
Other measures outlined by the president include using military members to support overburdened hospitals and the creation of more federal vaccine and testing sites.
There’s no word yet on when the website will launch for those who want to order at-home tests.
