(06/04/07) MAMARONECK ? The remnants of Tropical Storm Barry blew through Westchester Monday, raising flooding fears before it tapered off.
Heavy rains caused ponding on several roads during the morning rush hour. On the Tappan Zee Bridge, the speed limit was lowered to 45 mph due to the heavy rain and fog.
Parts of Route 120 in Thornwood were also closed after the rain downed trees and power lines in the area.
As if the traffic tie-ups weren?t bad enough, residents just getting over two major floods in Mamaroneck were bracing for the possibility of a repeat. Residents affected by the flooding of the Mamaroneck River anxiously watched to see if water would spill over the banks. Many said they felt helpless.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sen. Chuck Schumer recently announced a $30 million project to study and improve both the Mamaroneck and Sheldrake rivers. That bill passed the Senate, but it still must go through the House.
