Bagel Cafe reopens following lease agreement
The Bagel Cafe at the Mall at Bay Plaza is back in business after facing the threat of closure.
Charlie Mafelli, who has run the bagel store for 25 years, was trying to negotiate a new lease with management when he got word that it would not be renewed. He even scheduled an auction to sell off the store's belongings.
A miracle, as Mafelli calls it, happened just in time for the holidays when he and the management company were able to come to an agreement. He reopened for business on Dec. 5.
Under the terms of the new lease, Mafelli says he must renovate his store after the New Year. He says the reason he fought so hard to stay in business was because of the outpouring of support from the community.
