Authorities say a 12-year-old boy struck by a police cruiser in Fair Lawn has died from his injuries.
The accident happened Sunday after 9 p.m. on Route 208 South.
According to authorities, the 12-year-old boy was walking with his brother and two other friends when he was struck on Route 208 South. They say the kids were trying to cross the highway.
The marked cruiser was driven by Michael Sansevere, a Bergen County sheriff's officer who was on patrol in the area.
The boy, who attended Thomas Jefferson Middle School, was pronounced dead shortly after the crash. His name hasn't been released.
The school district issued a statement saying, "When our school community experiences a tragedy such as the loss of a young life it impacts all of us. If you see that your child is grieving please seek help from our counselors or another trained professional in our community."
Sansevere was taken to a hospital for evaluation, but it wasn't clear if he was hurt in the accident.
He has served with the sheriff's office for about 10 years.
AP wire services helped contribute to this report.
