An animal cruelty investigation is now underway in Orange County after a horse was found dead and another one was found emaciated over the weekend.
The discovery was made Saturday on a remote patch of land on Medura Lane in Goshen's Black Dirt farming region.
Authorities say neighbors alerted them to the conditions, and that one horse was found starved and the other severely malnourished.
Rescuers say the horses were surrounded by an electric fence that kept them captive and starving, while their owner, vegetable farmer Pedro Rodriguez, allegedly partied in the woods.
"There was evidence that people had been out on this island. Soda cans, bottles and chairs. Like people were sitting out there drinking in the woods and these animals were starving to death," says Becky Tegze, a Pets Alive rescuer.
News 12 went to his home, and he said that he did feed the horses.
Police and SPCA Humane Law Enforcement say tests are being performed on both horses and that charges will likely be filed against their owner once the tests are complete.
