Attack accusations put Mt. Pleasant group homes under scrutiny
Mount Pleasant town leaders and community activists are calling for change at two schools for troubled teens following recent violent incidents.
In February, three teenage boys from Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School were charged with gang-raping a 13-year-old girl in a vacant building on campus. Last week, a 12-year-old boy was accused of sodomizing another 12-year-old boy in their dorm room at the Pleasantville Cottage School.
Mount Pleasant Supervisor Robert Meehan and activists say the centers are also causing a financial drain on the town. Meehan says in the past year, the police department has spent $18,000 in overtime responding to more than 500 calls from the schools. Meehan is asking the state to conduct an investigation. He also wants communities to possibly share the burden by opening up other facilities for troubled teens.
