A state assemblyman in Orange County who is an Army reservist has been activated to help the New York National Guard’s COVID-19 mission.
Assemblyman Colin Schmitt, of the 99th District, was activated for duty on Saturday.
He’s now serving in a statewide distribution mission to transport essential supplies like beds, PPE and hand sanitizer to hospitals that need it.
Schmitt, a corporal in the Army National Guard, says this mission is like none other.
“This is something quite unique. I feel not only for myself but for many of my battle buddies because we are helping our community, which is one of our most important tasks but also we are all dealing with a crisis at the same time," he says.
Schmitt’s district office in New Windsor is fully operational during his activation, with staff working from home.
