Students at Yonkers' Saunders High School got an extended break Monday when administrators decided to keep the school closed due to asbestos removal.

Crews were removing asbestos from the boiler room during the winter break as part of a rehabilitation project on the 50-year-old heating and air conditioning system. The project was delayed when workers didn't come in Friday.

The Department of Labor said the asbestos is contained to one area, but school officials are still waiting for air quality test results from an environmental agency before reopening the school.

"We have to make sure the boiler is completely safe and make sure the building is completely safe before we let students back in," said Yonkers Schools Superintended Bernard Pierorazio. "Until we get final air quality tests, we will not let students in," he said of the precautionary decision.

The results are expected by the end of Monday or sometime Tuesday.
