A Westchester County teenager has secured a No. 1 ranking in fencing in the United States.
In April, Armonk native Sylvie Binder slipped away to Tashkent - the capital of Uzbekistan - for a world championship fencing tournament. The 15-year-old took the world by storm when she placed third in her age group, cadet.
The showing vaulted Binder to a No. 1 cadet ranking in the U.S., which cemented her place among a new generation of American fencers now vying with the best in a sport long dominated by Europe.
A day in Binder's life typically involves a full course load at Byram Hills High School, often followed by volunteering and homework, which leaves little downtime to spend with her siblings.
Binder's coaches say her work ethic is what sets her apart from other competitors.
In June, her hard work paid dividends when she won the silver medal at the summer national championships in San Jose, California.
