A snapshot of an apparent racist "promposal" on Instagram has triggered outrage in Pleasantville.
News 12 obtained a copy of the post, which shows a Pleasantville High School senior holding flowers and a sign that reads, "If I were black, I'd be picking cotton, but I’m white so I'm picking you for the prom."
The post prompted school officials to ban the senior and his friends from the prom.
The superintendent released a statement saying that the district rejects the message of the “promposal,” and is treating the issue seriously.
The same text that appeared in the Pleasantville post had been posted on an Ohio student's social media page. There was also a similar incident in Texas.
The district says it has invited community organizations to partner with the student body to engage them in meaningful discussions about race.
Students who spoke with News 12 say they are upset by the ordeal. "Not shocked but I was surprised that it would happen in Pleasantville. But I’m also disappointed because it's my peers and I know them long enough to know we wouldn't do anything like this," says student Asher Stein.
