The American Cancer Society is in need of volunteers to help provide transportation to cancer patients who have no way to get to their treatment.
More than 100,000 New Yorkers will be diagnosed with cancer this year, many of whom will have no way to get to their lifesaving treatment.
Eileen D’Anna survived a rare, inoperable cancer called sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC).
“It was a very aggressive and hard to treat cancer,” she says.
D'Anna underwent seven weeks of radiation and chemo before doctors could operate and remove the mass. She's now cancer-free for nearly two years and using her new lease on life to give fellow cancer fighters a lift.
"I decided the best way for me to help would be to help the Road to Recovery Program with the American Cancer Society,” she says. “I drive patients to their treatments. I also help coordinate patients getting rides.”
More information about the Road to Recovery Program can be found here.
The American Cancer Society tells News 12 that it doesn’t have enough volunteers to fill the demand.
"Last year we were able to provide 1,000 rides in our community but that's not enough,” says a representative of the organization. “Many times they miss treatment and that's really hard because it’s a lifesaving treatment."
Volunteers are needed in Lower Hudson Valley, and particularly in Westchester and Putnam.
It requires a yearlong commitment and that drivers provide a ride at least once a month.
Interested drivers must have:
  • A valid driver's license with a clean record
  • A reliable vehicle with proof of insurance
  • Regular desktop, laptop, or tablet computer access
  • Willingness to be screened and trained
For more information or to volunteer, please call the American Cancer Society at 800-227- 2345 or visit this website.
