Alleged home copper thief caught red-handed
A man is facing charges Monday for allegedly stealing copper from a Scarsdale home that exploded in an accident last week.
Police say someone spotted Jesus Oliveros Contreras, 31, loading the valuable copper in the back of his truck Saturday from 60 Fayette Road, which is fenced off. The witness called 911 and police say they pulled over the suspect with the evidence.
Authorities believe the copper could have netted Oliveros Contreras $1,000 at a scrap metal dealer. They are investigating whether he's linked to similar thefts in the area.
Oliveros Contreras is charged with petty larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He faces one year behind bars if convicted. The multimillion dollar home blew up after a construction worker who was using a backhoe to put in a storm drain hit a gas line.
