Allegations of fraud, illegal kickbacks besiege Westchester Medical Center
Westchester lawmakers are looking for information from hospital officials concerning a recent federal probe into Westchester Medical Center.
Just when it looked like the financially troubled hospital was getting back on its feet, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services inspector general issued subpoenas requesting the hospital's financial statements. The probe apparently concerns leases, rental agreements and the recruiting of doctors to the medical center.
The hospital had financial problems for years, losing more than $200 million since 2001. Over the last few years, the county has invested more than $100 million in the institution to keep it from closing. The state also kicked in an additional $75 million to help. Westchester Medical Center spokesman David Bellig confirmed a Monday meeting with lawmakers about the probe. Bellig says the federal subpoena request isn't uncommon in today?s highly regulated health industry.
