Alan Hevesi cashing out as state comptroller
State Comptroller Alan Hevesi has resigned Friday. The resignation is part of a plea deal where Hevesi pleaded guilty to a Class E felony for having state employees drive his wife. Hevesi will not face any jail time and will pay a $5,000 fine. In court, he admitted the services during 2005 and 2006 could not be properly characterized as security and he did not plan to reimburse the state. He will be sentenced on February 9. In October, the state Ethics Commission said the comptroller broke the law when he had state employees drive his wife from 2003 to mid-2006 and did not reimburse the state. Hevesi said the driver was needed to provide security for his wife after threats were made against both himself and his wife. Last week, Hevesi agreed to pay the state $206,293.79 to settle how much was owed. Hevesi managed to win re-election in November, even as his opponent, J. Christopher Callaghan, and the media frequently focused on the issue. Hevesi has stated he will not take the office on January 1.Hevesi was first elected to the office of comptroller in 2002.
