Accused fiance killer's lawyer pushes for bail hearing
The attorney for the woman accused of killing her fiance while kayaking in April is fighting to get her a timely bail hearing.
Angelika Graswald, 35, is currently in Orange County Jail in Goshen. She is accused of killing her fiance, 46-year-old Vincent Viafore, on the Hudson River near Cornwall while they were kayaking nearly three weeks ago. Viafore's body has not yet been found, despite weeks of searching by multiple agencies.
Orange County District Attorney Dave Hoovler said Friday that Graswald is being held on a sealed indictment, but her attorney says the incarceration is unfair without a bail hearing.
Defense attorney Richard Portale held a news conference outside of the jail, calling on Graswald's release.
Police first considered Graswald a survivor in a tragic accident, but later charged her with murder in Viafore's presumed death. Portale says his client is innocent and deserves a timely bail hearing.
While speaking with News 12, Graswald said that police are wrongfully accusing her of tampering with Viafore's kayak to kill him because of relationship problems. Police have not disclosed information regarding evidence or a motive.
