About 1 in 6 Americans lost their jobs in the past five weeks. It's the worst string of layoffs on record.
Hartsdale resident Samer Khoury is one of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers going through the painstaking process of filing an unemployment claim, after his medical massage clinic shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Another 4.4 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week. More than 26 million have filed for jobless claims since the outbreak began.
In the Hudson Valley, unemployment claims are up more than 1,866% from the same time last year. The restaurant and hotel industries were hit particularly hard.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, nearly 205,000 New Yorkers filed for unemployment insurance benefits last week.

Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul says the state is trying to keep up. Frustrated, unemployed constituents have also been reaching out to state Sen. Shelley Meyer.
“We have people crying on the phone to us,” she says.
Khoury isn’t at that point yet, but with a new baby on due in June, he says he is worried time may be running out.
