A Mamaroneck man was killed Tuesday night when his car crashed into an ambulance at the intersection of Mamaroneck Avenue and Sheldrake Place, police say.
Police say Donato Protano pulled out into the intersection just as the ambulance was speeding by on an emergency call. Police had to smash the rear window of the car to pull Protano out and administer CPR.
Protano was an active member of the Allesandro Manzoni Lodge, where he was leaving when the accident occurred. The 90-year-old man helped build the lodge, according to friends, and he attended many dances and card-playing events.
?He did a lot for this club,? Dominick Spano, a friend, says. ?Anything you asked, he?d do it.?
Police are reconstructing the incident to determine exactly what transpired as their investigation continues.
