Westchester's first coronavirus patient is speaking out about his battle with COVID-19.
Lawrence Garbuz, of New Rochelle, appeared on NBC’s ‘Today Show’ this morning and says he very thankful to be alive.
Garbuz says he originally thought he was just dealing with a cough. "After we entered the ER, I had no recollection of anything that transpired until I woke up from the coma; so it's as if three weeks of my life completely disappeared and I was asleep for all of it."
He says the thought of returning home to his wife and kids, plus the care of his nurses and doctors, is what kept him going throughout his tough recovery process.
He is crediting his wife with playing a crucial role in his fight with the virus. She says her main priority was trying to retrace their steps, to try and stop the spread as best as she could. "It was most important to me to make sure everyone was safe. I got the diagnosis at 9 p.m. and basically was on the phone through the night. Various departments of health, finding out what to do, sharing everywhere we went. That was so important, I didn't want anyone else to get sick. I knew what we were going through and I didn't want anyone else to do that."
