A three-alarm fire swept through several Jersey City apartment buildings Saturday, and residents affected by the blaze are crediting two neighbors with saving lives.
The fire broke out around 1 p.m. Saturday. It took about 65 to 75 firefighters to extinguish the fire that saw flames shooting through four different roofs on the 20th block of Weldon Street.
Despite the heavy smoke and flames, residents say they were able to escape thanks to some local heroes, in addition to responding firefighters. News 12 is told that two men ran into the buildings, knocking on doors and helping to evacuate residents.
The men, Jay Jayanty and Jared Maldonado, risked their lives to save several kids who were home alone, as well as a mother and her 6-month old boy who were trapped. The woman's husband expressed gratitude for the men's heroic actions.
The fire chief says there were concerns the fire might jump to buildings across the street because of the wind and smoke volume. But the fire was eventually contained.
Crews remained at the scene Saturday evening dousing hot spots.
No injures were reported and the fire doesn't appear to be suspicious.
