Heavy rain mixed with ice and light snow and plunging temperatures is keeping road crews busy in Putnam County.

Highway crews have been spending a lot of time at the salt barn, loading up trucks to be ready for whatever comes next.
Mike Simone, the highway superintendent for the Town of Carmel, says rain can be a problem as well as the snow.

"It's running along the road, with the freeze thaw it creates potholes," says Simone. "A small hole can create a pothole in two or three days and it can take out a whole tire."

Simone says 28 crews are on the roads to make sure the conditions are safe.
