2 rescued after car plunges into Saw Mill River
Two people are safe today thanks to the lifesaving efforts of an off-duty Yonkers firefighter.
Capt. Robert Smith, a 16-year veteran of the Yonkers Fire Department, was on the Saw Mill River Parkway Sunday when he saw a pickup truck hydroplane then hit a guardrail and plunge into the Saw Mill River. His lifesaving training kicked in and he quickly went to help.
Smith says a man and woman were inside so he grabbed a rock to break the windshield. He says the woman was frantic because she was still belted in and her side was underwater. Smith was able to get both people out safely.
The victims examined on the scene were OK.
