2 cases of swine flu confirmed in Rye
Westchester County's health commissioner says a 25-year-old Tuckahoe man who recently traveled to Mexico has been identified as a third probable case of swine flu in the county.
Dr. Joshua Lipsman says there are two students at Rye Middle and High School who have confirmed cases of swine flu, but their symptoms are mild. The Tuckahoe man exhibited symptoms after returning from a vacation in Cancun last week.
In addition, Lipsman says the decision to close down Rye Country Day School has been reversed and the school can reopen immediately. The Rye Country Day School had decided to close after two students were told they have probable cases of swine flu.
Health officials say the Rye Middle and High School has decided to remain open because the two sick students came down with symptoms about one week before the swine flu outbreak was identified. The school superintendent says the students are recovering. The students do not have any connection to Mexico.
"I want nothing more than to get the students back in school as soon as possible," says Lipsman. "I respectfully ask for everyone's patience as we sort through a rapidly changing, unprecedented situation and try to keep everyone safe and protected."
Lipsman has asked Rye schools to monitor an unusual increase in absenteeism among students and staff members and to report any changes to the county health department.
