1st Dodge dealership in tri-state area to close
The troubled Chrysler automaker announced Thursday it will close 789 of its dealerships, including one in Westchester County that has been in operation for 95 years.
Tator's Dodge, located at 20 Spring St. in North Salem, has been a family business for three generations. Chuck Tator, the current owner of the dealership, says his grandfather bought the business for $600 and a horse nearly a century ago.
On Thursday, Tator received a letter from Chrysler, informing him he was on the list of dealers being shut down.
The dealerships slated for closing will have a chance to appeal to Chrysler, but if the decision goes through, the first Dodge dealership in the tri-state area will be forced to close its doors.
"We are their history," Tator says. "We're the last Dodge dealership. It's like trying to throw your grandmother down the stairs."
Tator says he plans to file an appeal. A final decision will be rendered by a federal judge June 9. If the dealership closes, Tator says he will keep his four employees and transform his business into a garage.
