11-year-old from Chappaqua dies in ice climbing fall

The son of the New Castle Town supervisor Ivy Pool died in a hiking accident on Saturday in the Catskill Mountains in Greene County.

The son of the New Castle Town supervisor Ivy Pool died in a hiking accident on Saturday in the Catskill Mountains in Greene County.
Mattias Edstrom, 11, died after falling about 300 feet.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office says Mattias was ice climbing with his father, three other adults and two teenagers in the town of Hunter.  They were walking out on a section of a trail that was equipped with a hand line, the boy lost his footing, slipped and fell.
He was a sixth grader at the Robert Bell Middle School in Chappaqua. The school’s principal called Mattias a brilliant, kind and loving young man.
Counselors are at the school to assist students.
