An 11-year-old Mount Vernon boy faces charges Tuesday for allegedly stabbing a 13-year-old boy on a street.
Police say the suspect got into a fight with the older boy around 11 p.m. Monday at an apartment complex located at Third Street and Third Avenue. The altercation ended with the young boy allegedly stabbing the teen in the thigh.
Authorities aren't saying exactly what the boys were fighting about or what they were doing out so late. The 11-year-old is charged with assault in the incident.
"It's just very disturbing to this department and this city because the mayor's office and this city has done a tremendous amount of outreach ... to try to get the message to them that tolerance is better than physical force," said Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong.
A neighbor describes the young suspect as the aggressor. According to that neighbor, the victim is a nice boy who comes every summer to visit his grandparents.
The victim is in stable condition.
