Emma Jefferies celebrated her 109th birthday Monday. She's lived through the Great Depression, civil rights movement and technological advances.
Her friends at the Bayberry Care Center in New Rochelle threw a party complete with dancing and music. Jefferies' proud daughter also attended.
"I'm so overjoyed I can't even express [it]," Jefferies said as her eyes glistened with tears.
Jefferies was born Aug. 11, 1899 and was the oldest of 12 children. She moved to Yonkers in 1920. Her grandparents were slaves. Jefferies remained active in the community and even took in foster children.
Jefferies said she has little to do with her longevity. "I have no secret," she said. "I always left the important things up to God."
Staff at the center confirm that 109-year-old doesn't go anywhere without her Bible.
