Despite complaints Yorktown police are too aggressive, officers are still confiscating political signs posted in the wrong places.
Police say they have been confiscating signs placed within the town's 10-foot right of way area, next to most roads. Political signs have been hauled in to police headquarters, as well as signs for charity and community events. The effort has ruffled some feathers in Yorktown. Some have complained many signs that were removed were beyond the 10-foot limit. The police chief says officers are simply enforcing laws on where signs can be placed and are not considering the sign?s content.
Town officials are working on a series of sign guidelinesto avoid any confusion. The police chief says he will return signs to anyone who wants to claim them. However, he warns that summonses will also be issued. Police are also removing signs attached to utility poles. In those cases, violators could actually face criminal charges.
