Yonkers structure fire leaves multiple apartments unlivable

Fire officials with the Yonkers Fire Department say a fire at 354 Nepperhan Ave. left the fifth floor of the building uninhabitable following an apartment fire that occurred Wednesday evening.
According to Yonkers Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief James Kenny, initial reports came in around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday.
He says upon arrival, heavy smoke and fire was seen coming from the roof.
"Crews immediately went in and started to attack the fire. We had to transmit a second alarm because of the volume of fire," he said.
It is currently unknown where the fire started, but fire officials can confirm the apartments on the fifth floor were so badly damaged, the apartments are uninhabitable.
One resident evacuated after seeing black smoke outside of her window and was able to notify crews on scene of her neighbor who has limited mobility.
"As I was coming down the stairs...everybody was starting to get trampled on. So, when I got outside, I started calling everybody and I just thought about her and said oh my god. Ms. Tony is still up there," she said.
Fire officials say based off of the primary search, everyone was able to make it out safely.
