Hundreds watched intense wrestling matches Friday night in Yonkers. "We've got former WWE superstars, the Headbangers. We got former WWE superstar Chris Masters in addition to Hornsswoggle," says Jason Baez, executive director of My Brother’s Keeper.
Over 800 tickets were sold to the matches at Yonkers Middle School.
"We are excited but we're also here just to support the community," says Raheem Azeez, a student.
These matches also held a deeper meaning.
"It's also an opportunity where people get to meet other students and make new friends. So Monday, when all the kids are coming to school, they talk to each other, 'hey did you see the wrestling, did you see what happened?'" says Baez.
Yonkers My Brother’s Keeper and Yonkers Public Schools teamed up with wrestlers to help inspire students and learn about building a strong community. "Yonkers is a special place. We have a lot of diversity. We have a lot of different cultures and we know that wrestling brings people together," says Anibal Soler, superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools.
This was the first wrestling event held by the schools and Yonkers My Brother's Keeper. Students, My Brother's Keeper and Yonkers Public Schools hope this will become an annual event for the community so they can keep spreading this message. "When we start something, it's definitely going to leave a legacy and from that moment on, it's like something that really just kind of starts to become a tradition," says Samuel Rodriguez, a student.
