Yonkers police and community members are working to combat the gun violence that is plaguing the city?s streets.
The city has seen a fair share of shootings and deaths this summer. Efforts by the police, such as a gun buy-back program, have shown some measurable results. Police report that 490 guns were collected since the program started on August 2.
Jim Bostic, director of a summer day camp program at the Nepperhan Community Center, says breaking the cycle of violence is the key. He says the camp is trying to turn the next generation away from gangs and guns. Bostic also leads the city?s gang prevention coalition. He says the goal is to drive home a positive message to young boys and girls.
