The city of Yonkers came together Saturday for one of the largest community Ice Bucket Challenges in the country.

The fourth annual event was one of the first ever to raise awareness for ALS. The now-worldwide challenge first went viral over four years ago after Yonkers native Pat Quinn helped to create the social media sensation.

Quinn’s father spoke with News 12 on behalf of his son, who now has difficulty with speech.

“The Ice Bucket Challenge made such an impact on the ALS community, nationwide, worldwide, and we cannot let it go back to pre-Ice Bucket Challenge days when it was in the closet,” said Pat Quinn Sr.

The free event attracted hundreds who have made it an annual tradition, including local ALS patients and their families.

Organizers say they will hold the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge every year in Yonkers until a cure for the disease is found.
