On the heels of a vaccine mandate for state workers issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the Hudson Valley's largest city is now requiring COVID-19 vaccinations for its employees.

All city employees in Yonkers, including teachers, must now get vaccinated or be tested for COVID-19 weekly.

Mayor Mike Spano issued the vaccine mandate Wednesday.

He says it needs to be done to bring COVID-19 cases down and to protect all the people in the city.

Spano tells News 12 about 30% of city workers are still not vaccinated.

All of them must show proof of vaccination in early September or get tested each week.

What the testing process will look like, including whether employees will be tested at work or must be tested on their own time and supply testing results each week, is still being ironed out.

"Science pretty clearly tells us, you know, what we need to do and how we can best protect ourselves from being infected with COVID-19. So we're going to do that, and what keeps me up, yeah, is that maybe there's a disbelief that this isn't real," says Spano.

News 12 has learned that the New York state Senate and the state Court System are also issuing a vaccine or testing mandates.

A White Plains official tells News 12 they're discussing the vaccination issue with the city's union reps. Mount Vernon and Rockland County say they are not pursuing a mandate at this time. However, News 12 has been told by officials at various levels of government that more mandates are coming.
