A Yonkers family of three was treated for minor injuries at a hospital after a fire destroyed their apartment Sunday morning.

Fire officials say the fire happened at the Jeffrey Park Apartments on Morrow Avenue just after 8 a.m.

Investigators say a burning candle that fell onto the sofa ignited the fire. They added that the one-alarm blaze took about 45 minutes to extinguish.

Longtime resident Cynthia Pian and her family were awakened by the sound of fire crews who responded to the blaze that started in the second-floor apartment.

"Immediately, of course, it's kids out, pets out, that's my first thought. Make sure everybody's safe," she said.

Firefighters on the scene added that fighting the fire was not an easy battle in that it posed some additional potential dangers.

"The unique part of this building is we're not allowed to put apparatus in the front of the building. We have to do all the firefighting from the rear of the building," said Yonkers Fire Department Battalion Chief James Kenny. "If somebody's hanging out the window on the other side, we've got to possibly rely on ground ladders or a rope rescue."

Investigators say the apartment is a total loss and, for now, unlivable.
