A newly renovated shelter in White Plains is offering much more than a bed to those in need.

Earl Sorrells, 62, fell on hard times, and after years on the streets he finally moved into the Open Arms shelter on East Post Road. He is the first of 38 homeless men to move into the shelter.

Sorrells says he once owned a home, but he couldn't keep up with the mortgage when his hips gave out and his mother got sick. 

He says Open Arms, which is run by Lifting Up Westchester, provides him with a single room and his own closet. He says best of all is that the shelter gives him something that has been missing for a long time -- his dignity.

The shelter provides homeless men with a bed, a warm meal, clothing and counseling for drug and alcohol addiction along with mental health issues.
