There will soon be a new way for patients to get the health care they need at one hospital.
A 280,000-square foot, eight-story ambulatory care pavilion will be built on the Valhalla campus of Westchester Medical Center to provide a place for patients who don't need an overnight stay at the hospital. "The medical center has been more [of an] in-patient advanced care facility. The health care system is changing. We need to change with the system," says center president Michael Israel.
A vote by the Westchester County Local Development Corporation Board made the $230 million project possible, by allowing the hospital to apply for tax exempt loans. That money will create new space for patients, new offices for doctors and new employment. "People don't need to go to [the city] anymore, now they feel the need to do that. So we're getting quality health care right in Westchester and this [is] just going to make it better," says Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.
Over 225 construction jobs and 180 new full-time jobs are expected to result from the project. Construction should begin in June and be complete in 2018.
