As local Ukrainians mark the country’s Independence Day, financial aid continues to pour out of Westchester to the war-torn country.
The war in the eastern European country is now in its sixth month.
Support from SUMA Federal Credit Union in Yonkers, which is staffed with Ukrainian Americans, has been helping send funding to aid in Ukraine's war efforts since Russia began invading the country back in February.
SUMA president and CEO Roman Kozicky, who is Ukrainian American, said this Independence Day, he is honoring those who are actively fighting to maintain the country's freedom and independence.
"Independence, we will never give up independence," said Kozicky who is also a representative for the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America Westchester Branch
Ukrainian Americans say the war has taken a toll.
"The war is not getting better, the situation in Ukraine is critical," said Mariana Nosal, a Ukrainian American living in Yonkers.
Nosal said she has family living amid the conflict.
"My parents are there my sister with her kids and her husband in Ukraine," she said.
She may not be on the front lines herself, but she is aiding the effort to help soldiers through Revived Soldiers Ukraine.
"Since Feb. 24, 2022, (we) raised over $10 million to help Ukraine to help wounded soldiers," she said.
The nonprofit volunteer organization is working to send medical aid and supplies to Ukrainian soldiers.
