A vigil was held Wednesday at Bell Works in Holmdel to remember the victims of a mass shooting at an elementary school in Texas.

The vigil took place inside the atrium of the complex. Candles were lit and placed in a vase for the 19 children and two teachers who were killed inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. All of the victims were from the same classroom. White rose petals were placed on the ground in a circular pattern.

“It breaks my heart that our children are growing up like this – in fear of somebody who needs help,” said Jennifer Marmorato, of Holmdel.

Marmorato is the mother of a 7-year-old and 12-year-old. She owns a flower shop within Bell Works. She says that she cannot understand the violence. Others attending the vigil say they agree with her.

“Our hearts have gotten so hardened to this violence that we are unwilling to do the things that need to be done that are sensible,” one attendee said.

Authorities say an 18-year-old gunman bought two AR-15-style rifles two days before the shooting and was wearing body armor when he approached the school.

The people who gathered at Bell Works say that they want to see some sort of change when it comes to this type of gun violence and access to such weapons. But they said that Wednesday’s vigil was meant to be present and to remember the victims.

It was organized by Paola Zamudio.

“I think everybody who showed up is in pain,” Zamudio says. “I think we all have one thing in common – this is not OK, what’s happening.”

This is the 30th shooting that has happened inside of a school this year, according to officials.
