A Connecticut State Police Trooper was back in court Thursday facing manslaughter charges for the shooting death of a 19-year-old after a high-speed chase.

Trooper Brian North pleaded not guilty Thursday during a brief appearance in Milford Superior Court.

He remains free on bail but is on paid administrative leave with his police powers suspended pending the outcome of the criminal case.

North is charged with the shooting death of Mubarek Soulemane.

"I want Brian North to go to jail for killing my son. For massacring my son, that's what justice is for. And I want a guilty verdict for Brian North," said Soulemane's mother, Omo Klusum Mohammed.

Body camera video allegedly shows North firing seven shots into the driver's side window of a stolen car after a high-speed chase up Interstate 95 from Norwalk to West Haven two years ago.

An investigation showed Soulemane had a knife but he was boxed in by police.

"We believe that after the jury or the judge is shown the video in this case, pictures of the truth, it will be clear that this was an execution," said family attorney Sanford Rubenstein.

Soulemane's family and civil rights leaders demanded North lose his job for killing Soulemane.

North came to court Thursday, walking with many fellow officers who support him.

"He is working together with his legal team and working through this," said attorney Frank Riccio, with North's defense team.

North is due back in court on Sept. 15.

An attorney representing the family says the trial in this case is not expected to start for at least a year from now.

North is the first Connecticut police officer in more than a decade to be charged in connection with a deadly shooting.
