A man is accused of profiting from his mother's death by allegedly collecting her Social Security benefits long after her death.
State police say Thomas Toomer, of Newburgh, has received about $85,000 in payments over the past 14 years since his mother died. He is accused of never notifying Social Security officials of his mother's death and instead, he allegedly used the money to pay his bills.
Authorities say it was only a matter of time before he was caught. "Upon a certain age, it's usually over 90, they'll start individually reviewing each account to make sure the beneficiary is still alive and eligible for benefits," says state police Lt. Michael Drake.
Toomer is currently out of jail on bail, but police say he might face additional charges.
