375ds agoA new program in Orangetown is letting residents recycle food scraps to be made into compost.
Kelly Carson Adams, of South Nyack, says she was part of a group of composters who pitched the idea to town officials. Residents can drop off the old food at the Orangeburg Highway Department.
She says as more people join the free pilot program, her group hopes it will expand. Officials say 920 pounds of scraps were recycled in the program's first month alone.
Orangetown Supervisor Teresa Kenny says she believes that as people see the benefits, the program will continue.
She also says the town will get a small amount of money back for the compost it makes for its program partner - Rockland Green, a waste management business.
Similar programs are currently happening in Westchester County.
