Four cases of E. coli bacteria from bagged spinach have reached New York as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirms the source of the outbreak.
Even though the four cases in New York are not in the Westchester or Hudson Valley area, health officials are urging people to throw out any bagged spinach they have purchased. The FDA says the tainted greens has been linked to prepackaged spinach distributedby Natural Selection Foods LLC. The E. coli outbreak has caused one death and has made nearly 100 people ill across the U.S.
Stew Leonard's in Yonkers pulled every bag of fresh spinach off its shelves when news broke that it was responsible for the outbreak. Shoppers say they will just buy other vegetables in the meantime. Stew Leonard?s says it will give a refund to anyone who bought spinach with the "best if used by" dates of August 17 through October 1, as the FDA is recommending.
