The Suffolk County Republican Committee has nominated former state assemblyman and ex-Huntington town supervisor Chad Lupinacci for a seat on the Suffolk County Legislature.

In 2018, Lupinacci was accused of sexual assault by a former staffer who filed a civil lawsuit against him.

The Republican candidate chose not to seek re-election for Huntington town supervisor in 2021.

Lupinacci will run against Suffolk County Legislator Rebecca Sanin in November's election.

Suffolk County Republican Committee Chairman Jesse Garcia released a statement, saying, “The Suffolk County Republican committee tonight announced its to decision to support Chad Lupinacci’s as the candidate for candidacy for the Suffolk County Legislature 16th District. Chad stands on a solid record of accomplishment in his time in both local and state government, and we are confident that we will add another member to the Republican Majority as they work everyday to make Suffolk safer and more affordable for every resident.”

Democrats responded to the nomination.

Sanin released the following statement, "I am proud of my record as a bipartisan voice for District 16 in the Suffolk County Legislature, delivering results on clean water, open space, public safety, and affordability. Our communities deserve a leader with integrity—someone who shows up, does the work, and puts families, children, seniors, and veterans first. I have spent everyday fighting for our neighbors, and I look forward to this election as an opportunity to continue building a stronger, safer, and more affordable Suffolk County for everyone."

Suffolk County Democratic Chairman Rich Schaffer released said in a statement, “I’m glad we will get answers to the many questions that were left unanswered when Chad left so abruptly during COVID.”

Garcia responded by saying, “Chad Lupinacci is grounded in public service and a champion for education who has been overwhelmingly elected to both the state assembly and as Huntington town supervisor. Mr. Lupinacci has a long record of fighting for the people of Suffolk and is not a professional politician."

“We look forward to comparing Mr. Lupinacci‘s long record of community and service accomplishment to make Suffolk safer and more affordable against the failed partisan ineffective record of the democrat incumbent.”
