It was quite the discovery for one pastor of a Suffolk church when he found tens of thousands of bees swarming in the bell tower.

Pastor Anthony Montoro ventured up to the top of the bell tower at Community Baptist Church in Cutchogue ahead of a painting project when he made the buzzing discovery.

"There were bees coming in and out at a very good rate," says Montoro. "I noticed there was a lot of honeybees coming out of the corner of the bell tower."

A church member put Montoro in contact with beekeeper Ken Robbins. Robbins says there were about 30,000 bees and 11 cones.

"This was probably well definitely my most challenging job," says Robbins. "The bee's nest was 65 feet off the ground up in the steeple right above me with no railing.

Robbins got down to business with the help of fellow beekeeper Pamela, a Suffolk legislator with a vested interest in protecting honeybees and a friend with a drone and camera.

"Everybody was kind of working together," says Leg. Al Krupski. "The bees weren't upset at all with even being removed. They knew what he was doing, I guess the right thing."

Krupski is responsible for helping to pass a bill that requires residents to call a beekeeper rather than an exterminator to safely remove honeybees.

Robbins suggested the church auction off the honeybees so that's exactly what it plans to do over the weekend.

The rescued bees will go to the highest bidder and that money will be used for church renovations.
