Family blames Westchester Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing for coronavirus death
There have been four coronavirus deaths in Mount Vernon, and the mayor's office is confirming they're all residents of the Westchester Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing.
The city also confirms of their 109 coronavirus cases, 26 of them are from the facility, which is about 25% of all cases in the city
Today, a daughter of one of those residents believes that nursing home dropped the ball.
One of the victims was Mary Stokes. The 68-year-old passed away Wednesday from COVID-19. Her daughter Makeda Watkins says when the virus hit Westchester County, she claims staff didn't wear protective equipment. Her mom went to the hospital on March 12, and Watkins says she is the one who ordered it.
Watkins tells News 12 that week she noticed something was off with her mom for three days, but every time she told staff, they responded that her mom was fine. The third day, March 12, Watkins says she followed her gut and ordered the home to send her mom to the hospital where she was tested and confirmed to have the virus. "If I could do it all over again, I would do it different. I’m just really heartbroken that someone is telling you something is wrong with your loved ones and you're not taking it serious. Why would you ignore that and to come to me and tell me she's fine?" says Watkins.
The administrator for the Westchester Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing claims the accusations aren't true and said he would arrange an interview with News 12 to tell their side of the story. The interview has not been scheduled yet.
