The Nyack School Board has passed a controversial resolution to turn a baseball field into a parking lot.
Residents tell News 12 that the board voted 5 to 1 last Tuesday evening to temporarily lease the field on North Midland Street to Montefiore Nyack Hospital.
According to the school board’s legal counsel, the field will be used while the hospital builds a parking garage on the hospital's property.
Montefiore Nyack says it does not plan to touch the adjacent football field or track.
The lot will fit 100 parking spaces. The lease is set for 12 to 18 months. School officials say the lease is not allowed to exceed more than 2 years.
The hospital plans to turn the field back into grass at the end of the lease.
Neighbors packed the meeting to voice their concerns and are not happy.
"This is our children's space. Our children walk down here from the middle school and if there is a parking lot, there are cars going to be coming out and potentially hitting kids. It's just a big risk, " says Justin Macha, of Nyack.
