Advocates of the Climate and Community Protection Act that's making its way through the state Legislature say it will create thousands of new green jobs and get New York off fossil fuels by 2050.

Jamie Jordan says she watched in horror as her neighborhood in Rockaway was swept away during Superstorm Sandy in 2012. With four young children and now living in Rockville Centre, she says "bold, radical action" is needed to make an impact.

Sponsors of the bill, state Sen. Todd Kaminsky and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, along with community members and groups like the Long Island Progressive Coalition, rallied in Mineola Thursday in an effort to make a final push to get the climate legislation passed.

Lawmakers who support the bill say action is needed now to prevent destruction like that of Sandy.

Critics of the legislation say the technology to get off the grid is not yet in place, and some business leaders say it will cost taxpayers money and hurt the economy.

The Climate and Community Protection Act is expected to pass in the state Assembly and Senate before the legislative session ends on June 19.
