News 12 Digital is highlighting the most-viewed stories of 2018 as part of our 'News 12's Most-Viewed' series. This story on an Uber driver charged with kidnapping and assault was first published on Oct. 16. Original story below.
An Uber driver has been charged with kidnapping and assaulting a White Plains woman after she fell asleep while getting a ride home.
Officials say Harbir Parmar, 24, of Queens, allegedly kidnapped a customer in February.
Investigators say Parmar picked up the victim in Manhattan, but allegedly never delivered her to her destination in White Plains.
The victim fell asleep on the ride and alleges she woke up to Parmar fondling her. He then allegedly took her phone so she couldn't call police, and dumped her on the side of a highway in Connecticut.
Parmar made bail Tuesday after being formally charged in federal court in White Plains with kidnapping and wire fraud.
In addition, authorities say between December 2016 and February 2018, Parmar overcharged Uber customers on at least 11 occasions, totaling more than $3,600.
Any other potential victims are urged to call the FBI's Westchester Resident Agency at 914-925-3888.
Parmar is now on house arrest and electronic monitoring. He is no longer allowed to work as a cab or ride-sharing driver and Uber officials say he has been removed from their platform.
This is the second incident involving an Uber driver transporting a passenger to Westchester this year.
In a statement, an Uber spokesperson said: "What's been reported is horrible and something no person should go through. As soon as we became aware, we immediately removed this individual's access to the platform."
People who spoke with News 12 say they find the story very frightening. "If that happened to me, I could see how that would be horrifying and traumatizing," says Allison Albeen, of New Jersey.
