A slow recovery has brought temperatures back to the 30s Friday afternoon for the first time since Sunday. The official high at Central Park was 33, ending the streak of four straight freezing cold days, the longest in seven years. The warmup takes a brief pause Friday night and Saturday with similar conditions expected. Lows dip down to about 20 degrees by Saturday morning and top out around freezing, 32 degrees Saturday afternoon. The wind will be light and minimally impact wind chills.
Temperatures in the 40s are back on Sunday with another push of warmer air from the south. Before the 40s, there will be a small storm that misses the borough to the southeast Saturday night. A few snow showers are possible across Long Island but expecting to remain cloudy and dry here. Clouds clear for sun on Sunday, allowing temperatures to reach 42 degrees, three degrees above average.
The next opportunity for rain or snow is not until midweek next week at the earliest. A clipper storm could clip the area with a few rain and/or snow showers on Wednesday, but details are limited at this point. More details will be available by Sunday. A better chance at a sizeable storm will be the following weekend. Details remain limited but stick with the News 12 Storm Watch Team for updates next week on any potential winter storms.
If the city receives less than 0.13 inches of precipitation between now and the end of January, this will become the driest January ever recorded in New York City.
